Government statistics show that homes with no security measures are five times more likely to be burgled than those with even simple security devices in place.
At this time of the year, with the holiday season fast approaching, it makes good sense to take stock of your home security so that, when you take off for a vacation, you can be sure your home is safe and – if you have to make a claim – your insurance won’t be compromised.
Simple precautions that work
A few simple precautions will not only protect your property and give you peace of mind, they’ll go a long way towards ensuring your insurance will cover you against any claim you might have to make after a break-in or a burglary.
For example, if you haven’t already done so, you should fit sturdy deadlocks to all your outside doors and windows, especially those on the ground floor and any that are easy to reach.
While we’re talking about keys, it’s also important to keep your keys in a safe. Don’t leave them under flowerpots or behind loose bricks. Thieves always look there first.
Again, if you haven’t done so already, it’s a good idea to install outside security lighting. If other people think your property is occupied, a burglar may think twice about trying to break in.
It’s also wise to have all your valuables security marked. This will help the police verify their ownership, if they’re stolen. If you have any particularly precious items you’d rather not have marked, it makes sense to keep them in a safe or strongbox.
Think about a house sitter
If you’re going to be away for an especially long time, it’s worth considering the use of a house sitter; someone who’ll stay in your home and look after everything – even your pets, if they’re not travelling with you.
There are three or four companies operating on a nationwide basis, any of which you could contact. You’ll find a number by Googleing ‘house sitters’.
In every case, the people who’ll look after your home while you’re away will have been carefully interviewed for the reliability and trustworthiness. If nothing else, their presence will act as a deterrent against any unwelcome visitors and – more importantly – unwanted thieves or vandals.
Finally, if you haven’t already done so, it’s always a good idea to join your local Neighbourhood Watch (if there is one in your area).
By working with your neighbours to keep an eye on each other’s property, you can make a burglar’s life much more difficult.
