Is your travel insurance volcano proof?

It seems no time at all since Iceland’s unpronounceable volcano was causing chaos at many of Europe’s major airports.

Now we face the possibility of yet more disruption caused by the eruption of Iceland’s Grimsvotn volcano, even though the threat seems less severe than last time.

Looking back, many people were confused by the mixed messages coming from the insurance companies about compensation for alternative travel arrangements and emergency accommodation.

At the time, much was made of the fact that Eyjafjallajökull’s eruption was said to

be an event that was out of human control.

Since then, some insurance companies have updated their policy wording to include ‘volcanic activity’ as an insured peril.

This should bring greater clarity to the situation and ensure that clients whose cover includes ‘volcanic activity’ will get adequate compensation for reasonable travel and accommodation expenses, should be they be stranded at an airport by delays caused by an ash cloud.

Does your insurance cover your plans?

Even if we disregard the possibility of further volcanic eruptions and airline disruption, it remains a fact that travelling with inadequate or non-existent cover can be false economy of the worst kind.

It’s a fact that, while there is no such thing as a standard travel insurance policy, there is also no substitute for having cover of some kind – especially when a lack of insurance could spoil a family holiday or a long-planned trip for two.

As a traveller or holidaymaker, you should check your policy carefully to make sure you have the cover that meets your needs – including the possibility of having to deal with unwanted disruptions caused by volcanic eruptions.

Your Lumley St Aubyn account handler will be happy to advise on the best insurance for you, whatever your plans may be.
